15.1.2009 Canatu demonstrates widest operation range saturable absobers



Canatu today announced that Tampere University of Technology (TUT) researchers have successfully tested the use of its thin films for femto second frequency laser mode locking. The laser apparatus was build as a joint effort between Canatu and TUT. The device used the Canatu specialty thin films as saturable absorbers. These unprocessed films, deposited directly from Canatu's proprietary aerosol-reactor onto a highly reflective silver mirror, showed a uniquely wide operating wavelength range.

"We saw sub-pico second mode locking in the wavelength range between 1000 to 2000 nm. This is the broadest operation range ever reported for a single CNT absorber" said David Brown, CEO and board member of Canatu. "The result means that a single saturable absorbing mirror, simply and cheaply produced, can be deployed at all of today's common fiber laser wavelengths: 1, 1.5 and 2 microns. Making ultrashort pulsed laser systems is important for material processing such as laser cutting and thin film coating, medical applications such as laser scalpels and high bandwidth optical communications."

18.12.2008 Canatu reaches 200 micrometer patterning resolution



Canatu today announced that it has successfully reached the 200 micrometer line width in its product development project for large area carbon nanotube thin films. The films, deposited directly from Canatu's proprietary aerosol-reactor, were directly patterned into a grid consisting of 200 micrometer wide lines and spaces. This development enables Canatu to pursue touch screen sensors and other macro electronics markets with its existing technology. These results also take the company closer to display backplane needs and other smaller line width markets with requirements for flexible, conductive and patterned transparent thin films.

Canatu today announced that it has produced carbon nanotube thin films with world record conductivity and transparency properties. The 50 square centimeter films, deposited directly from Canatu's proprietary aerosol-reactor, measured 80 % in transmittance (at 550 nm) and 55 ohms per square for sheet resistance. These inspiring results take Canatu even closer to display and PV market requirements for flexible, conductive and transparent thin films.

Canatu today announced that it has successfully scaled up its dry deposition technology for producing carbon nanotube thin films. The films, deposited directly from Canatu's proprietary aerosol-reactor, measured 50 square centimeters in size. This linear scaling leap serves as further evidence of the commercial viability of Canatu's dry printing technology and takes the company yet one step closer to display and PV market requirements for large area, flexible, conductive and transparent thin films.

Canatu today announced that Dr. Yrj Neuvo, former Nokia CTO, has joined Canatu Board of Directors as an independent member. Dr. Neuvo was elected at Canatu's board meeting today.

18.9.2008 First deposits made with Canatu's new reactor



The first test deposit runs with Canatu's new reactor were made today and they proved to contain good quality carbon NanoBuds(TM). The first runs were not expected to produce usable material straight away, and the discovery was greeted with joy. "This is a exciting day for Canatu. These results show that our synthesis technology is robust and linearily scalable." said David Brown, CEO of Canatu.

Development project to scale up Canatu's proprietary synthesizing method for carbon nanotubes and carbon NanoBuds started in April 2008. This project aims to work as proof-of-concept for the scaling capabilities of the production process. So far the project has proceeded as planned. "We experienced some minor setbacks during assembly, but were able to stay on schedule", says Brad Aitchison, Canatu's Production Manager.

The project itself is far from completed. To ensure Canatu's high standards of output quality, the reactor is now up for extensive testing and calibration. Evaluation materials from the new reactor are expected to become available in November 2008.

5.6.2008 TEKES gives Canatu a substantial grant



Canatu Ltd., a leading edge nanotechnology company commercializing carbon nanotube (CNT) and carbon NanoBudTM thin film applications in the electronics, optics and energy sectors today announced a 1.75 Million Euro Research and Development project funded 50% by TEKES, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. "This is an important investment for Canatu. Tekes support will allow us to significantly accellerate our commercialization process, particularly our process scaling and quality control efforts," said David Brown, CEO of Canatu.

Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation is the main government financing and expert organisation for research and technological development in Finland. Tekes finances industrial research and development projects as well as projects in universities and research institutes. Tekes especially promotes innovative, risk-intensive projects.

12.12.2007 Canatu receives 1.4 M Euro of seed finance



Canatu Ltd., a leading edge nanotechnology company commercializing carbon nanotube (CNT) and carbon NanoBud(TM) thin film applications in the electronics, optics and energy sectors announced today a 1.4 Million Euro seed investment from Infosto Research and Development Oy of Finland. Ari Ahola, of Infosto was named as Chairman of the Board. "Canatu is excited to have Infosto as our seed investor. Ari Ahola is a proven and well respected entrepreneur who will add valuable energy, experience and focus to our business team." said David Brown, CEO of Canatu.

Mr. Ahola was a fighter pilot for the Finnish Air Force until 1993. He founded and acted as a CEO of Infosto Mediat Group until 2001 whereupon he made a successful trade sale exit. He has founded several companies in the US and Finland and serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Biozone Scientific International, Inc, eFruit International, Inc, Finnish Media Group, Inc and Media Invest Inc. He is a member of the board of InfoMedia (Beijing) Digital Technologies.
